Quiet Time
Almost everyone has some sort of daily routine or daily habits. One of my favorite parts of every day is spending quiet time with the Lord. This wasn’t always a habit, but for the past few years it has been so beneficial and enjoyable :) In this post I will be sharing some of my favorite things that I do in my daily quiet time with the Lord.
To define my terms, I would define “quiet time” as time set aside each day to build one’s relationship with the Lord. This is one on one time with the Father, to praise Him, enjoy His presence, and simply rest in Him.
Bible Reading
The Bible is the ultimate source of truth. It is the Word of the Lord. We grow to love, trust, and obey the Lord more and more as we read His Word. The beginning of Psalm 1 says, “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night.” Because of this verse I started the habit of reading my Bible at night before bed as well as in the morning. In the mornings I enjoy doing an in depth, verse by verse study, slowly working through one book at a time. For the past month or so I have been studying 1 and 2 Peter and I have been enjoying taking notes and spending time simply thinking about the passages and how I can apply the ideas of the verses to my life. At night I love to read a Psalm before going to sleep. I find it to be calming and encouraging and it also helps me to reflect on my day and reset my focus on the Lord.
Prayer
We have a direct line of communication to the Creator of all things through prayer, and yet we neglect prayer and instead waste time worrying. Prayer is another key component of my quiet time. It is a wonderful blessing that our God is relational, He is a loving Father who wants a relationship with us, His children. Going on prayer walks is a fun way to focus on prayer alone, I find it very easy to praise the Lord while enjoying His creation. Kneeling to pray is also something that has helped me with devotion in prayer. I rarely kneel for anything else so the posture of kneeling helps my focus to remain on the Lord rather than drift to other things. Another thing that I am trying to do a better job of is being constant in prayer throughout the day. Even if it’s only a small frustration or a little praise, take it to the Lord. When we come to the Lord in prayer we can be fully honest with Him about absolutely anything, He already knows, but He loves to hear it from us, to have that intimate relationship with His children.
Silence and Listening
Part of bringing our struggles and requests to the Lord is patiently waiting for an answer. It is a wonderful and peaceful thing to take the time to rest in silence and simply sit in the Lord’s presence. Listen to the Lord. Wait and see what He puts on your heart. Reflect on His glorious blessings. Rest in His presence.
Worship
Worship is another wonderful addition to a quiet time. It could be playing worship music, going for a walk or run to enjoy the Lord’s creation, drawing or painting, really anything that brings glory to the Lord, and causes you to love and praise Him. While there is no one right way nor any all encompassing form of worship I personally find great joy in musical worship. Playing guitar or piano or listening to worship music while I get ready for my day is such a wonderful way to delight in the Lord and His glory.
To recap, having a quiet time each day is a lovely way to grow and deepen one’s relationship with the Lord. Some of my favorite components of my personal quiet time are Scripture reading, prayer, and worship. If you already are in the habit of setting aside time for the Lord each day's awesome job, keep it up :) Even when you have the habit you must strive to continue in faithfulness, don’t become complacent. If you are not in the habit of spending some time with the Lord each day I challenge you to commit 10 minutes a day to your relationship with God. It’s not always the most easy thing but it is always worth it!
